SECURITY: Soldiers are not Journalists, neither do they Receive orders nor Report for Social Media - Cameroon Defence Minister Beti Assomo Warns.

By Martial Gnoukapasir

Cameroon defense minister Joseph Beti Assomo on a working visit to the 5th joint military Region ( The military component of the North West and west regions of Cameroon), has called on soldiers to stop practicing citizen Journalism. "...Soldiers are neither Camera men nor Journalists..neither do they take nor receive orders from social media.." he said.

The call came at a time when there've been massive condemnation of military filming and posting certain contents online with the recent being the case in wum where a soldier filmed angry Mbororo youths on rampage in the subdivision.

The June 6th trip was to appraise the security situation of the North West region deeply affected by what is today known as the  anglophone crisis.

He extended president Biya's message of comfort and courage to wounded soldiers at the Rapid intervention battalion (BIR) dispensary unit and those at the military hospital in Bamenda, followed by an in-camera security meeting with the commander of the 5th military region, North West governor alongside other security big wigs. A meeting which provided him with first hand information of the security situation on the ground.

His equally made a stop at the North West gendarmerie legion office where he was exposed to items which the military has been able to confiscate from secessionist fighters in the region. They included both sophisticated and  locally fabricated fire arms and pistols, bullets, box hammers, daggers, saws and axes, Amba flags and t-shirts plus what one has come to know as "Odeshi" amongst others.

At the Bamenda airport base where he had a brief meeting with the soldiers, a moment of silence was observed in honor of both fallen soldiers and civilian compatriots who've loss their lives owing to the crisis.

He then urge them to discharge their duties in strict respect of military command so as to avoid sanctions.

The soldiers were equally given the opportunity to express some of their grievances.
