By Martial Gnoukapasi.
"This gift will help my mother to be able to send me to school this year now that my father is not here. It will assist me to take notes and gain lessons on all that will be taught us by our teachers...I thank the minister of defence for the gift. It will help us to start the school year "
The above statement, was made by Nji, an 11-year- old pupil who gained admission and will be moving to form one come september 2nd 2019.
The sad part of this new academic journey of his is that, his father who served in the Cameroon military won't be there to accompany him, owing to the hard fact that he was lost to the enemy at the battle front.
At the Friday August 30th 2019 ceremony, organized on the behest of the head of state, for school kits to be handed to kids belonging to families of vigilantic troops and soldiers from the north west region, who died while serving the nation, that took place at the head quarters of the 5th military region in Bamenda, the secretary general at the North West governors office Harry Lanyuy Wangi, who presided over the brief event began by calling for a minute of silence to be observed in honor of the fallen Soldiers and compatriots.
This was proceeded by the handing over of the didactic materials to the kids of the over 30 families left behind by the Soldiers and vigilantic elements, who sadly couldn't defeat the natural disasters nor man-made conflicts that claimed their lives.
Questioned on the motive and message such gesture seeks to drive across, Colonel Tchuankam Andre of the 6th military sector(SM6) in Bamenda, who coordinated the program told MNews237 that;
" The authority in place asked us to hand these materials to the children of the fallen Soldiers. Also to the children of members of the vigilante committees who were beside us during the many battles they fought and died in an attempt to safeguard lives and goods... by this gesture, we are asking the families and children to as never before, forge ahead with their education, leaving behind the notion that all is lost in the absence of their fathers. The military is their new father. Even as I speak, if it so happens am not there tomorrow, am confident my colleagues will stand for my children. So they should go on with their studies and come back to help us maintain the integrity of this country."
The children shared a common meal with the military personnel before they were escorted to their various destinations by their mothers and guardians.
