Media Freedom Is Vital In Every Vibrant Democracy- NewSETA DG Seta Caxton Tells journalists At Media, Peace And Elections Workshop Opening In Yaounde

To run for 5 days, the workshop that has brought together over 50 journalists to brainstorm and share their experiences on issues centered around their profession, peace and elections, organized by the Network for Solidarity, Empowerment and Transformation for All(NewSETA) in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy(NED)USA and Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) has as major objective, accentuating the role of free press in shaping public opinion, in a climate of social crisis and electoral partisanship.
NewSETA director Seta Caxon also acknowledged in his opening remark October 22nd that, the challenges faced by the media in advocating for a free press was numerous, reason why he considerd the workshop timely.
His words were further complimented by that of the honourable member of parliament for the Momo East Constituency Enwe Francis, who re-iterated that journalists via the practice of their profession can either make or Marr a country. Enough reason for them to be conscious, objective, balanced as well as avoid hate and blackmail as they go about their doing their job.
Two modules featured in day one.
Data journalism and fact checking within an electoral period was elaborated upon by Paul Joel of Adisi Cameroon, while ethics of journalism, Cardinal principles for a journalist in ensuring and respecting fairness, social justice, truth-telling respect for privacy and the congruence of sources expantiated upon by senior Crtv ace journalist and icon Joe Chebonkeng Kalabubse.
In his presentation, he cautioned journalists to always seek and report the truth and nothing but the truth, minimize harm and act independently, so as to avoid any compromising situation.
The day ended with group work intended to help the media men and women put to practice, the lessons gained from the presentations.
