Contractors and other stakeholders involved in the execution of the public investment budget in mezam have been given till january 31st to consume pending 2018/19 credit cards of 5million and below, or face charges of misappropriation of public funds.
Member of parliament for bafut/tubah constituency Hon Fusi Naamukong, who doubles as head of the Mezam divisional follow up committee made the remark jan 15th. at the fourth quaterly follow up meeting, convened to evaluate the physical and financial realisation of 2019 projects in the division.
It was observed at the follow up session that there exists 2018 projects of less than 4million, that have not been executed by some project owners who continue to cite insecurity as reason for their non execution
while congratulating sub divisions like santa, bamenda III and II for negotiating their way through the realisation of most of their projects, he frowned at sub divisions like tubah for lagging behind.
"The era of citing the crisis in the region as excuse for not doing work is lazy, and before contractors bidded for these projects they were aware of the insecurity in the region." he added
Meantime the committee also called on the pay master general of the north west treasury, to pay outstanding bills owed some economic operators so they can be able to pick up new projects.
The news from the prime minister's office announcing the re-programing of projects not executed in the North West and South West regions of the country oweing to the crisis was also saluted by members of the committee.
Other recommendations arrived at the meeting include:
- The need for project owners to facilitate and accelerate execution of the 2020 public investment budget, in strict respect of the administrative procedures.
- Need for state control engineers to accomapny the execution process of projects, as to ensure standard and quality.
- And for warning letters to be served to contractors who fail to meet execution deadlines.
Public Investments projects(PIB) which include; municipal road maintenance, construction of boreholes and bridges, infrastructures and supply of school and hospital materials, electrification, construction of markets and community halls etc, are supposed to improve the livelihood of inhabitants of the beneficiary community.
Their non execution therefore hampers growth and slows down development.
