It's in honour of DDR inmates who've laid down their arms for peace - Ghejung Awunti

Ghejung Awunti - commissioner for economic development at the NW regional assembly

The commissioner for economic development at the North West regional assembly has highlighted reasons why his commission initiated the gala match for peace between the North West disarmament, demobilization and reintegration centre and the local administration.

Organized as part of activities to mark the 56th edition of the youth day celebration in the region, the encounter which went in favour of the Lions of DDR was to celebrate inmates who understood the call of president Paul Biya which is amnesty to all.

"The inspiration for the tournament came because of the fact that the institution that I'm part of which is the regional assembly is there to take care of people and the region in all facet. As commissioner for economic development we have to assure the future of our young ones and we do that via peace. What better way to do than to acknowledge those who've dropped their guns in favour of peace"

He said there was need to accompany the inmates to secure a brighter future for them.

Quizzed on whether the something have been carved for the ex fighters, most of whom are due reintegration under the commission for economic development, the commissioner said:

"the commissioner for economic development under the leadership of the president of the assembly puts forth ideas, policy changes, proposes investment for the entire. The DDR is within the region and so the policies that we are putting in place aim to benefit every citizen of the region. They're a special case because we need to assure ourselves that they have a fair chance to take advantage of what we put forth. We'll therefore ask our businesses, administration etc to make sure they ensure those who've gone through the DDR have a fair chance of the benefits and employment opportunities"
