CAMTEL Digital Sovereignty Day: stakeholders brainstorm, adopt strategies to secure Cameroon's cyber space, citizens and enterprises

CAMTEL - Cameroon's public telecommunications operator, as part of activities marking the celebration of it's 25 years of existence has organized the "CAMTEL Sovereignty Day" under the theme ' Digital Sovereignty: Strategic Challenge in the Transformation of the Structure of Cameroon's Economy '.

The event bringing together stakeholders of the public and private sector took place in the nation's capital Wednesday May 29, with objective of crafting recommendations that will foster the country's digital sovereignty. 

Speaking at the event, Judith Yah Sunday epse ACHIDI, general manager of CAMTEL, indicated that the event's subject, aligned with the context and theme under which the 52nd edition of the national day was observed this year.

She said promoting Cameroon's digital sovereignty will facilitate structural transformation of the country's economy, allowing it to regulate the action of contemporary technological giants while guaranteeing technological catch-up, placing Cameroon in a digital State of independence.


The development and enhancement of Cameron's digital technology she said, presents an opportunity for the country to meet the challenges of Unity, Peace and Prosperity as enshrined in the theme of this years national day celebration.

"Digital technology also presents itself as a potential source of reinforcement of inequalities, a medium for exacerbating social tensions and a possible vector of anti-values. Such issues are all the more important and urgent to consider when the country's digital sovereignty is not effective" she noted

CAMTEL boss also remarked that Cameroon finds itself within the context of globalization and should be able to benefit more from the prerogative of cyber space in its effort to achieve technological independence.

'More strides needs to be made in this regard in an effort to attain the National Development Strategy 2020-2030(SND30) already at the  operationalization phase'

Technical adviser number I at Camtel, Mr Francis Ottou at the one-day event indicated that there's a lot of wrong and fraudulent use of data as on more and more people on daily basis, continue to develope multiple ways of using it. digital sovereignty, if re-enforced will go a long way to guarantee national integrity, security and protection of citizens in the country.

Speaking to media at the event, Judith Yah Sunday epse ACHIDI, general manager Camtel said, as the leading and lone state telecommunication operator, it is incumbent for the company to participate in the digital transformation of Cameroon's economy in line with the SND30.

She said it's important for Cameroon through the ministry of Post and telecommunication and Camtel to guarantee the digital sovereignty of the territory by protecting the country's data, protecting citizens and business enterprises from multinational companies abroad.

" It's important that we sit down with all stakeholders and discuss the relevant activities to put in place by CAMTEL in order to secure the cyber space and internet governance in the country"
