By Martial Gnoukapasir

Cameroon's Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, has inspected the ongoing construction of the new headquarters of the North West Public Independent Conciliator (PIC) in Bamenda, as part of government's efforts to promote good governance, accountability and lasting peace in the region.

The Prime Minister visited the construction site during his ongoing working visit to the North West Region on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. He was received by the North West Public Independent Conciliator, President Tamfu Simon Fai, who accompanied him as the contractor presented details on the progress of the project.

The new headquarters is expected to strengthen the institution's capacity to serve the population by improving access to justice, protecting citizens' rights, encouraging dialogue and promoting accountability in public administration.

The establishment of the Public Independent Conciliator's Office by the government came amid the crisis in the North West and South West Regions, with the institution expected to contribute to addressing governance-related grievances and strengthening relations between citizens and public authorities.

Good governance was among the concerns raised by those who initiated the crisis in the North West. The creation of the institution therefore represents one of government's approaches to responding to governance concerns, promoting dialogue and creating mechanisms through which citizens can seek redress.

The construction of the new headquarters is another step in strengthening the institution and improving its ability to fulfil its mandate.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to consolidate peace by promoting accountability, encouraging community participation and ensuring that citizens' concerns receive attention through institutional channels.

Project overview,

Under the leadership of President Tamfu Simon Fai, the North West Public Independent Conciliator has also advanced initiatives aimed at improving access to essential civil status documents.

These efforts include the establishment of birth and death certificates free of charge, alongside other civil status documentation services intended to ease access for citizens who might otherwise face difficulties obtaining such documents.

Access to civil status documents is particularly important for citizens seeking to establish their legal identity and exercise their rights, including access to public services.

The institution also places emphasis on community involvement in development efforts, accountability and improved service delivery as part of its broader mission to promote good governance in the region.

The ongoing construction of the new headquarters is expected to provide an improved working environment for the Public Independent Conciliator and strengthen the delivery of its services to the population.

During the inspection, the contractor briefed the Prime Minister on the project's progress and the stage reached in the construction works.

The visit underscores government's continued attention to institutions and development initiatives intended to support the peace process in the North West Region.

As efforts continue to restore peace and stability, the effective functioning of the Public Independent Conciliator remains important in providing citizens with channels to raise concerns, seek redress and participate in governance.

The successful completion of the headquarters, coupled with effective delivery of the institution's mandate, is expected to contribute to improved public confidence, stronger accountability and the consolidation of peace in the region.
