The CPDM Mezam IV Section in Bafut has used the celebration of the 44th anniversary of President Paul Biya's accession to power to rally the population behind the party ahead of the forthcoming twin elections, while renewing calls for peace, reconciliation and community dialogue as prerequisites for sustainable development.

The celebration, which took place at Nsoh in Bafut, marked a significant return of the section's anniversary festivities to the locality and brought together party officials, militants, traditional stakeholders, women and youths, with traditional dances and cultural displays adding colour to the occasion.

Presiding over the celebration, the CPDM Mezam IV Section President, who doubles as Bafut Mayor, Ngwakongoh Lawrence, described the anniversary as more than a ceremonial occasion, noting that it provided an opportunity to reflect on the political journey of the party, renew commitment to its ideals and reaffirm loyalty to its National Chairman, President Paul Biya.

He commended the Head of State for steering Cameroon through various political, economic and social challenges over the past 44 years, while expressing appreciation to militants across Bafut's 47 sub-sections for their sacrifices, discipline and steadfast commitment to the party.

With the municipal and legislative elections around the corner, Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence called on militants and the population to maintain confidence in the CPDM, arguing that the party's development record in Bafut provides sufficient grounds for another mandate.

He likened the situation to a winning team that should be maintained, while insisting that underperforming members must be replaced to strengthen service delivery.

He particularly appealed to militants to give incumbent councillors another opportunity, based on their contributions to the municipality's development and urged party stakeholders to consolidate their strengths, address weaknesses and ensure that competent people occupy positions of responsibility.

On peace and reconciliation, the Mayor called on Bafut inhabitants to take ownership of the community dialogue initiative launched by Prime Minister, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute.

He stressed that the initiative should not be regarded merely as a government programme but as a collective responsibility requiring the participation of every Bafut son and daughter.

He called on every son and daughter of Bafut to take ownership of the process and extend the message of dialogue and reconciliation into their homes, families and communities.

The Mezam IV Section President like the other speakers maintained that development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity, division and fear.

He therefore encouraged everyone to become an ambassador of peace and use available community structures to promote reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.

Party Stakeholders Pose with new converts

Bafut he said, deserves better roads, improved social infrastructure, quality public services, greater economic opportunities and an enhanced standard of living and these can also be achieved through support to elected officials.

The occasion also provided an opportunity for the council to showcase its achievements through the distribution of a magazine documenting projects executed from 2020 till date.

Mayor Ngwakongoh also encouraged the population to make effective use of the Bafut Beagle Community Radio, a new communication platform made available by the council to facilitate the dissemination of community announcements and activities.

In another development, five new converts who abandoned the opposition to join the CPDM were presented to the audience.

In a gesture of support to the population, 30 bags of rice donated by the Member of Parliament for the Bafut-Tubah Constituency, Hon. Agho Oliver, were distributed during the event. The donation was presented by his alternate, Hon. Akongwa Helen Ngwa.
