NORTH WEST: FAKE ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUG "HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE 50mg" SUSPECTED OF KILLING TWO IN BAMENDA.

By Martial Gnoukapasi.

According to the regional delegate for public health in the conflict hit North West region of Cameroon Dr Che Kingsley Suh, investigations have been opened to determine if actually a fake anti-hypertensive drug "hydrochlorothiazide" usually administered to patients suffering from hypertension is responsible for the death of two persons in the region.

      In the month of February 2019 a consignment of fake drugs were discovered in circulation within the region amongs  which was another fake drug meant to treat diabetes.

     According to the director, the minister of public health's attention was drawn to it after a considerable number of patients who had consumed these fake drugs began manifesting syntoms of it's effects.

    He said and I quote;

".... We had patients who were already suffering from effects. We decided as technician to carry out quality control..... We inform the minister of public health we who instructed that the drugs be seized from the markets...".

       The instructions from the minister led to a quality control mission in the region under the surpervision of the  regional committee for the fight against illicit sale of drugs headed by North West governor Adolph Lele Lafrique Tchoffo Deben.

   Over 15,000 fake drugs were discovered and seized from dealers in some four shops in the Bamenda main market and two shops around the foncha junction neighborhood still in the city.

    The drugs were later presented to the governor who seized the opportunity to reiterate that the fight against fake and illicit sale of drugs will continue and must extend to our local communities. "...the operation is meant to protect the health of our citizens against those dealing and selling fake drugs to our population..." he said.

      He equally launh an appeal for the population to avoid consuming drugs that are not from recognized pharmacy or health centres.

     The drugs were later on incinerated at the incineration centre at the regional delegation of public health.

     When asked if actually the fake anti hypertensive drug resulted to the deaths of two patients whose identity were sealed he said and I quote;

  "There are medical examinations and procedures to be followed so as to determine if actually it was the fake drug or other health associated factors that led to their demise".
