Bamenda II Mayor Supports Over 90 Bike Riders with CFA 400,000 for Fuel

The Mayor of Bamenda II Municipality, Chenwi Peter, has donated CFA 400,000 to bike riders in his municipality to help them purchase fuel and continue working so as to support their children and families during this back-to-school period.

Over 90 bike riders in the municipality benefited from the support, which was handed to them on Wednesday, September 29, at the Bamenda II Council Hall.

Mayor Chenwi Peter said the initiative is part of his continued support for bike riders in the municipality, whom he described as important partners of the council.

According to the mayor, the support is necessary, particularly at a time when families are busy preparing their children for the current back-to-school season.

He explained that, instead of supporting the riders with books and other didactic materials as he had traditionally done in the past, he preferred to support them with fuel this year.

“I had wanted to give you books and other school materials like I usually do, but I prefer to give you people cash to fuel your bikes, so you can work and use the proceeds to buy books for your kids,” Mayor Chenwi told the bike riders.

Mayor Chenwi also praised the Bamenda II bike riders for their responsible conduct and cooperation with the council. He encouraged registered riders who do not yet have their identification jackets to obtain them, so as to make it easier for the council to intervene when necessary.


“I called you people here to also thank you for respecting and standing by the council and for collaborating with the council,” he said.

“The executive of this council is proud of you people and appreciates the spirit of unity that exists among bike riders in the municipality,” he added.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Mayor Chenwi said his relationship with the bike riders goes back to 2020, when he took over as mayor of the municipality.

“I have a very strong partnership with the bike riders, and since 2020, we have been living like a family in good and bad moments. They are my brothers and are very collaborative with the Bamenda II Council,” he said.

He added that it is the responsibility of the council to support the riders, especially during this difficult period.

“Whether in education or health, the council will continue to support these riders whenever it has the resources to do so.”

The President of the Bamenda II Bike Riders Association, Mayenin Ndi, thanked the mayor for his continued kindness and support towards riders in the municipality.

He said the mayor had consistently responded whenever the association brought the difficulties faced by individual riders to his attention.

“There has never been a day that we’ll call and explain the plight of a bike rider that you don’t intervene to support financially or intervene in the case,” Manyenin said.

He assured the mayor that the bike riders would do their very best to accompany the council in promoting peace and unity, as well as ensuring that normalcy returns to the council area, Bamenda in particular, and the North West Region as a whole.

Mayenin further called on his colleagues to work together to improve the image of bike riders in the municipality.

“Let’s try to clear our image by coming together in love and unity. Choose courage over fear,” he urged.

Speaking to the press, the bike riders’ president said the support will gone a long way to encourage them to contribute to peace efforts.

“This gesture of the mayor has gone a long way to remind us again that we, the bike riders, must remain ambassadors of peace in this municipality and beyond.”

He said the main wish of the riders was for peace and normalcy to return to Bamenda.

The meeting comes just weeks after a similar meeting between bike riders in the region and North West Governor Adolph Lele Lafrique, during which the bike riders pledged their unflinching support for peace, promising to weed out bad elements among them.
